The overall  research topic of the « Soils and Landscape » (short name)  team concerns the analysis, modelling  and simulation of the spatial patterns of soil (units, properties) and cultivated landscapes (land-use, infrastructures, cropping systems, vegetative communities, etc) as well as their dynamics and interactions in short/middle terms.

The landscape mosaic (matrix) is the common research object for the whole team, with a specific focus on soil and landscape characteristics linked to hydropedological and/or ecohydroecological functioning.

This mosaic is studied at fine resolution (at the channel section or single plot scale) and landscape/catchment-territories spatial extents allowing, after collaboration with other LISAH teams, both, i) its explicit represention for hydrological impact assessment, and ii) the optimization of the landscape patterns to favour water, soils resources and ecosystem services .

The  cultivated landscape mosaic  dynamic, which can be impacted by both cyclic changes (cropping cycles, rotations) and trends (global changes, food market changes,... public policies)  is only analysed and modelled in the team from a season up to a few decades.


The team has built up and implement a group approach organized in three complementary research axes:

  • Methods for landscape mosaic observation

This axis aims to densify the spatial/temporal sampling of lanscape elements and properties allowing a suitable representation of their spatial patterns.

To this end, the team develops specific remote sensing and proxy detection methods (teledetectionproxydetection).

  • Landscape mosaic determinism

This axis aims to better know and formalize the processes that underpin the spatial differentiation and/or evolution of landscape elements and properties.

Two main approaches are developped: i) an inductive approach identifying the explicative factors of landscape patterns through spatial correlations among landscape properties, and, ii) an explicit approach of landscape stakeholders decisions (e.g.Dhyvine : simulation of the dynamics in time and space of tillage operations in a vineyard catchment).

  • Landscape modelling or simulation for mapping or numerical experiments

This axis aims to develop spatial models integrating the data and determinants on landscape mosaic secured in both previous axex, as well as providing the resulting uncertainties. These model differ, depending on the geographical features and topology retained for describing landscape elements and properties (e.g. specific sites for soil, lines for ditch networks, etc.) and on the use intended for the resulting outputs: models for digital mapping (soil) or for in silico experimentaiming to assess the impact of spatial pattterns on landscape functionning (Levavasseur, 2012: landscape configuration and hydrological functioning)
