The La Peyne catchment and the Roujan catchment

The Roujan catchment (0.91 km²) is located in France, in the Hérault department. Climate type is sub-humid Mediterranean with a long dry period. Mean annual rainfall over 20 years (1992-2012) is 634 mm and mean annual evapotranspiration (Penman-Monteith ET0) is 1102 mm.

Soils, mostly chalky and loamy, originate from the redistribution of Miocene marine materials, which make up the general substratum of the Languedoc agricultural plain. Grapevine is the main crop. This site has been strongly impacted by human activity for several millennia. The steep slopes have been terraced and a sizeable network of ditches criss-cross the catchment.

The observation facility's main objective is to measure and understand water and matter fluxes as influenced by agricultural practices and climate. In addition to a survey of human activities, the hydro-meteorological equipment, in place since May 1992, is comprised of a network of five tipping bucket rain gauges, a network for monitoring water tables level and quality and a measurement system of liquid and solid flows at the outlet, on the slopes, as well as on a 1 000 m2 experimental plot.
Matter fluxes (soil erosion and pesticide transfers) are monitored with automatic sampling devices. Others systems are now combined to complement base measurements: a tower for atmospheric fluxes measurements, a system for automated measurement of soil humidity at different depths on several plots within the catchment, a monitoring of flows and associated fluxes in intermediate catchments between land plot and outlet.

The Roujan catchment is a sub-catchment of the  Peyne catchment, a tributary of the Hérault river near Pézénas.

Intensification of the viticultural system dates back many decades and is presently associated with land abandonment in some terroirs with low agricultural value.

In collaboration with the French Ministry for Sustainable Development, LISAH has set up two flux measurement stations: the first one upstream the cultivated area in the La Peyne catchment, the other close to the town of Pézénas. Complemented by a network of manual water table level measurements and a network of rain gauges, this set-up is necessary for understanding water and matter redistribution processes at the resource catchment scale.
